A Splash of Vintage Glamour: My Marilyn Monroe–Inspired Swimsuit Design
There's something undeniably timeless about Marilyn Monroe. Her effortless glamour, iconic curves, and bold sense of style have continued to influence fashion for generations. As a designer drawn to classic silhouettes and feminine charm, I wanted to capture her essence in a modern, wearable swimsuit—something that channels the golden age of Hollywood while fitting seamlessly into today’s world.
of fashion.
The Spark of Inspiration
The idea first struck me while flipping through vintage photographs of Marilyn in the 1950s. One particular image—a black-and-white shot of her in a structured black halter swimsuit—stood out. It wasn’t just the style; it was the confidence she radiated. I wanted to create a piece that celebrated that spirit: something flattering, empowering, and a little bit flirty.
Reimagining the Classic
While the original swimsuit Marilyn wore was stunning, it was designed for a different time. My goal was to maintain the key elements that made it iconic—like the sweetheart neckline, high-cut leg, and ruched detailing—while updating the fit and fabric for today’s woman.
Key Design Features:
-
Silhouette: A structured one-piece with a ruched waist waist and tummy control and smaller than average pockets to make it breast cancer friendly. You can wear this with or without a prothesis.
-
Neckline: A halter neck tie, adjustable, either cross for the look or wear straight whatever you prefer.
-
Fabric Choice: I selected a luxe, recycled sculpting nylon-spandex blend that hugs the body and moves with it—perfect for poolside lounging or diving into the waves.
-
Color Palette: Classic black for the drama.
The Design Process
Bringing this piece to life was a journey. I approached a swimwear designer that had worked with several high street brands and created a range for a well know celebrity in a UK high street fashion store we sent the design and tech pack to a manufacturer and after rounds of prototyping and fittings. We were not happy with the quality of manufacturing and switched to the tone that I had used previously for the anchor and lemon swimsuits. Owen stepped up and the samples were so much better so I placed the bulk order. I wanted wearers to feel like movie stars—but not at the cost of comfort or movement. So I await there arrival in two weeks.
Celebrating Femininity, Then and Now
Designing this swimsuit reminded me that glamour isn't just about aesthetics—it's a feeling. Marilyn’s allure wasn’t just her appearance; it was her confidence, her playfulness, her unapologetic femininity. This swimsuit is my tribute to that. It’s for anyone who wants to tap into that timeless confidence, whether they’re on a beach, by a pool, or just looking in the mirror.
